It’s available in hatchback, coupé and estate variants so everyone is catered for. However, as Bob Dylan once perceptively announced, the times they are a’ changing. With so many young pretenders snapping at Polo’s well-trodden heels, how is it going to remain a petrol head favourite?
No longer the baby of the Volkswagen fleet (following the introduction of the Lupo in 1998 and then the Fox in 2004), the Polo now sits in a slightly odd position in between the entry level model and the higher spec Golf. New drivers will opt for the lower end models, whilst the more adventurous will jump straight to the Golf. It would appear to the untrained eye that Volkswagen are putting the squeeze on their own product. Are VW struggling to find a suitable niche for the Volkswagen Polo ?
Let’s take a look at the competition. The sporty-looking Seat Ibiza skips into view like a Spanish waiter with itchy under-garments, the Vauxhall Corsa stalks nearby like a Huntsman Spider and the ever-present Ford Fiesta reinvents itself more than Madonna does. That goes without mentioning the Fiats, the Toyotas and the Hondas, all of which are turning heads and gaining notoriety within the Supermini circles. In a purely aesthetic sense, the Volkswagen Polo doesn’t disappoint. The evolved looks cannot hide the treasured Volkswagen lineage, the curvy body updated to keep up with the Joneses whilst remaining distinctly ‘VW’. In relative terms the Volkswagen Polo is akin to an aging aunty with a keen desire to look 17 again; perhaps a nip here and tuck there and she’ll nearly be there... nearly. But would you want to be seen with her? Well, as a matter of fact, yes you would...if she was a Polo...which she’s not...but you understand what I mean...sort of. The point is that the Polo has retained the understated good looks and style that have maintained its popularity since its 1975 inception. The favourite chunky, boxy body has been smoothed out for modern taste, but is still unmistakably the ‘Volkswagen Look’.
Performance-wise the Volkswagen Polo is never going to reinvent the wheel, but no present or prospective Polo owners would expect it to. The whole Volkswagen shtick is reliability, sturdiness and a bit of oomph occasionally. The Volkswagen Polo E’s punchy engine is extremely responsive for a base model and is backed by excellent handling and an intuitive suspension system that will iron out the bumpiest of city streets or pot-hole ridden country roads.
The tired old cliché of efficient German engineering will be trotted out here, but there isn’t a single nuance of frivolity to be found on the whole car; everything is functional, because if it wasn’t it wouldn’t be on the car. A simple/basic concept has been applied to the designing of the Polo, ensuring that quality takes a huge precedent over quantity. Apply this logic to German beers if you will; never the tastiest of beverages and often more expensive than the other beers, but you always seem to get drunker quicker if you choose the Bavarian way. That, my friends, is efficiency.
The real feather in the Polo’s cap is the way it has effortlessly straddled and conquered the most pressing social issues of the day. The Volkswagen Polo ’s extremely low running costs combat the current economic burial pit we find ourselves in, whilst remaining kind to the environment with impressively low Co2 emissions. So whether you’re a financially doomed merchant banker or a earth-loving hippy, you’re unlikely to be annoyed by seeing this car on the road.
The future looks uncertain for the Volkswagen Polo ; the competition is mounting like a hungry pack of wolves, but for the time being it remains near the top of the supermini pyramid in both popularity and performance stakes. Whether it stays there for much longer is another matter.

It’s amazing what people will do if they feel it is socially acceptable. For example auditioning to be locked in a house for three months surrounded by cameras is the gateway to ‘stardom’, jumping off a tall building to your imminent death before a piece of cloth catches the air is seen as ‘fun’ and jumping into a freezing cold Scottish lake on New Year’s Day is ‘tradition’. I must admit that I’m guilty of having a go at modifying my current and previous wheels with mixed success. It’s funny to think that despite the millions of pounds spent designing the car you own; people automatically assume a few hundred quid here and there will improve it. Imagine if you applied this to your household items. Your washing machine for example spins at 1,000 a minute. Have you ever thought of turbo-charging it to boost spin power by 50%? Of course you haven’t as the professionals who built it would’ve done that already if it improved the cleanliness of your clothing.
I’ve got a toasted sandwich maker loving stored at the back of one of my cupboards that’s never seen the light of day. Do I have the urge to mould grooves to make it cook faster on the hot-plate? Clearly not. My PlayStation 3 doesn’t come with a spoiler fitted to make it load faster and my bed hasn’t been lowered to impress the ladies.
The furthest extreme I’ve seen car modifying taken was courtesy of my mate who quite frankly I keep as a friend purely for his humorous antics. Not content with buying a Volkswagen Polo from eBay of all places and then travelling 300 miles to collect a car that clearly wasn’t as specified in the advert, he’s spent a large amount of time flushing his money down the drain modifying the poor car. Let me throw some figures at you. He bought the car for £3000 and has since spent £750 on a exhaust, £100 on silver door pin covers for when the door lock pops up, £150 to have the rear boot handle spray painted, £500 on a sound system that flattens the car battery in five minutes, £150 to have the front grill replaced and the icing on the cake - £200 to have the engine re-mapped.
Now re-mapping isn’t changing the location of the engine parts, but having a boffin with a laptop plugging up to the engine and magically generating more power from it. This sounds great and for £200 you can’t go wrong you must be thinking. Only problem is that Volkswagen are German and no-one designs machinery better than them, particularly when you consider the people employed to do the tricky calculations under the bonnet barely see daylight and instead see numbers flashing before their eyes. As a result, £200 laptop man has managed to confuse the sophisticated computer that controls all facets of the engine working correctly and my mate now drives around with so many warning lights on his dashboard it’s permanently Christmas for him.
What he should’ve done if he wanted a Volkswagen Polo with more oomph is to have purchased the GTi version. The Polo comes with the same turbocharged 1.8 litre engine found in the Audi TT; albeit one that produces 148bhp rather than 237bhp. Clearly Volkswagen have put their sensible hats on as anymore power than the 148 would quite frankly be scary, so no need to get the laptop out then.
Thanks to this relative restraint under the bonnet the chassis can cope with the power, giving you the confidence to throw the car into any corner and feel confident you won’t end up in a hedge. It’ll still race to 60mph in just 8.2 seconds mind. The Polo GTi is what made the original Golf GTi so exciting before it got bloated with age – it looks like the standard hatchback save for a few subtle tweaks to the front grill and ride height, but it has real spirit and the feeling that there is nothing superfluous to distract from the joy of driving it.
It’s far closer to the cost of the original Golf GTi too with a new Polo GTi costing under £15,000 which taking into account inflation is marginally more than the original GTi’s £5,700 price tag in 1981. Compared to the massive £22,000 the Golf GTi now commands new this really is a no brainer. It would save my friend a fortune in time and money – especially a second hand version.

2003 Volkswagen GTI VR6


The 2003 Volkswagen GTI is available in two hatchback models: Volkswagen GTI 1.8L and GTI VR6. The GTI 1.8L is powered by a 180-hp turbo gas engine and the Volkswagen GTI VR6 is powered by a 2.8L 200-hp gas engine. The Volkswagen GTI 1.8L can be coupled with either the standard five-speed manual transmission or the optional five-speed automatic. The Volkswagen GTI VR6 only has the standard six-speed manual transmission. Optional packages for both models include the Cold Weather Package, the Leather Package, and the Luxury Package. 2002 Volkswagen GTI VR6


The 1.8T four-cylinder turbo engine has been upgraded from 150-hp to 180-hp. The optional automatic transmission, available only on the 1.8T, has been upgraded to a five-speed Tiptronic unit. Last year's Volkswagen GLX equipment is now grouped into various option packages. Late in the model year, the original 174-hp Volkswagen GTI VR6 was replaced with a 24-valve Volkswagen GTI VR6 with 200-hp mated to a new six-speed manual transmission. Volkswagen Concept BlueSport


Volkswagen defined just two objectives in the car’s development: maximum driving fun and minimal fuel consumption. And so a mid-engine sports car was implemented that makes no compromises, that aims at low weight and maximum agility right from the start. Although it is best in its class when it comes to body rigidity, the Concept BlueSport weighs in at less than 1,200 athletic kilograms. The results: performance that is more than impressive for every life situation, in addition to the cited fuel economy and emissions advantages. Low weight was attained by consistent application of lightweight construction methods (among other things, the soft top – at 27 kilograms – is the lightest in its class, and the hoods are made of aluminum), and by a body layout with crisp and compact dimensions.
Despite all of the sports car fascination included on board, it still offers a respectable level of everyday utility. In the cargo area under the front hood, for example, the Concept BlueSport can stow 112 liters of luggage; its counterpart in the rear can handle an additional 70 liters of cargo volume. Altogether that makes 182 liters – enough for working documents or an extended weekend trip for two. Also extended, by the way, are the distances between any two fuel fillups. With a fuel tank volume of 50 liters and the noted fuel economy of 42 mpg (consumption of 4.3 liters per 100 kilometers), the theoretical range is greater than 710 miles (1,150 kilometers).
Making a positive impact on the car’s range, fuel economy and emissions are two technologies that could become more and more commonplace in the future and are part of the so-called Eco mode on the Concept BlueSport: an automatic start-stop system and braking energy regeneration. The place where automatic start-stop shines is in city traffic. When the Concept BlueSport stops at a red traffic light, for example, it automatically shuts off its engine. As soon as the light turns green again, just tapping on the gas pedal is enough to start the engine lightning fast. Its entire operation is absolutely intuitive and saves up to 0.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers in the city. Furthermore, primarily when the Concept BlueSport is braked, energy is generated by the alternator (regeneration), which relieves the engine and further improves fuel economy.
